27 Weeks

We have a court date! This Thursday, we will finalize Logan's adoption. We are so excited!!!!!! We were told that we would have to wait until May, but the lawyer called this morning to let us know that there is a time on Thursday that is open and wanted to know if we wanted it. Ummmmm....YES! We are so very excited for this last step in the process.

I'm going to take this opportunity to answer some common questions we receive:

What happens on adoption day?
We will go to the courthouse and the judge will declare us Logan's legal guardians. Until now, we have been sort-of foster parents (although that's not what we are called). But Logan has not been officially ours. He will be on Thursday...forever and ever!!

Could the birth mother or father contest the adoption? No. The birthmother signed away her rights the day after Logan was born and the birth father did not register with the Putative Father Registry. All of their rights have been forfeited. Even if something would go wrong with Logan's adoption (this would NOT happen, but let's say, for instance, we changed our minds...), the birthparents have no rights.

Do you have Logan's birth certificate? No. We will get a birth certificate after the adoption is finalized. It will list Zeb and I as his parents. After that, we will have to apply for a new Social Security number, as the one he was given at birth was kept private because of the nature of our adoption.

Are you going to tell Logan he was adopted? Yes. We do not feel that adoption is something to be ashamed of or something that we should hide, and we certainly do not want to lie to our son. We plan to incorporate Logan's adoption story in our conversation so that there is never a time when we have to sit him down and have "a talk." For instance, I tell Logan a story once in a while...how mommy and daddy wanted a baby so we called Miss Gloria and asked her if she could help us get a baby. We prayed that God would bring us our special baby when the time was right. Then, Miss Gloria called us and said that she had the perfect little boy for us. We went to the hospital to pick him up and all of his family came to visit him....you get the point.

What will you tell Logan about his birth parents? If Logan asks questions and the time is right, we will tell him what we know. Again, we won't lie to him. We do not know much about his birth parents, so this is really not going to be an issue.

Will you help Logan search for his birth parents once he is of legal age? Yes. "Legal age" basically means that the court records can be opened and that happens when Logan is 21. Although we have no idea what emotions we will experience at that point, if Logan desires, we pray that he will be a Godly man and his motivations will be respectful. If he seeks our help, we will help. If he has no desire to pursue this, that is fine, too. It's his decision.

We do not want Logan's adoption to define him, but it is a very special part of his story. We believe that God's power and guidance can be seen in every step of our adoption of Logan and that is exactly what we want to teach him!

Logan is quite the studious little boy, not to mention, a multi-tasker. He LOVES his Jumperoo and spends so much time in it. The other day, he was "reading" the little book and flipping the pages and then he would spin the ducks. It was like he was on an assembly line. Flip the page, spin the ducks. Flip the page, spin the ducks. It was so cute. And boy, does he ever study those pages. It's always a joy to watch him...always entertaining!
